The museum town of Berat is locally called as “the city of a thousand windows” for the many windows in the white plastered, terracotta roofed houses on terraces overlooking the Osum river. High hill, a 14th century citadel shelters many small Orthodox churches. The city itself was established in the 3rd century BC on the site of an earlier settlement by the Illyrians and was named Antipatrea. For a very brief time in 1944, Berat was the capital of the liberated Albania.
